Technological advancements in tyres increases the efficiency of vehicles & safety
A good tire installed in the vehicle as per the requirement can increase the efficiency by 15-20% even in extreme weather condition. Tires are the last connected link in the transmission system. It has been used to support weight of the vehicle, absorb road shocks, transmit traction, torque and braking forces to the road surface. A tyre has different need as per the weather condition in different regions. Hence, companies offer winter tire, summer tire, all season tire, all terrain tire and high-performance tire as per the requirement of the user. Growth of the automotive tire market has been influenced by automotive market significantly. Growth in the automotive market will augment the demand of tire. As per International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers about 97 million 4-wheeler were sold in 2017 at a growth rate of 3.1% year on year basis. Different type of tire is used in passenger vehicle, commercial vehicle, two-wheeler and construction machineries as per required size and load bearing capacity.
Beside automotive sales major aspect that are influencing the global automotive tyre market include cohesive government policies, growth in automotive sector and technological advancement. Government of developing and emerging economies are working toward development of basic infrastructure and construction of roads. It is increasing the tyre market in many ways. Firstly, it is increasing road connectivity hence augmenting the sale of automotive in the region. Secondly, development of basic infrastructure increases the demand of heavy commercial vehicles & construction machinery and third well-constructed roads results increase in the average speed of the vehicles which will augment the need of high-performance tyres.
Major companies contributing in the growth of automotive tyre market includes Bridgestone Corporation, Continental AG, Goodyear, Michelin, Pirelli, and Hankook. These companies are working towards various technologies such as self-inflating technology and continuous pressure monitoring technology in order to provide better safety during driving and to reduce accident cases. Goodyear-Dunlop had developed the Twin-Air-Chamber technology in the tyres. These were introduced for the SUVs, by splitting the tyre’s air chamber. The idea of twin air chamber is that whenever one pocket punctures, the journey can be continued at a reduced speed. The tire has a smaller contact area with the road, and the two chambers are separated by a wide groove. Additionally, it reduces the overall tyre weight, rolling resistance and fuel consumption. Regardless of the less contact area, the new design is safer as any other tyre. These types of tyre are expected to launch till 2024.
In Sep, 2017, Continental AG introduced two new technology concepts ContiSense & ContiAdapt for better safety and comfort of vehicles. The new system enables continuous monitoring of the tyre’s condition, along with situation-matched adaptation of tyre performance characteristics. ContiSense technology is based on electrically conductive rubber compounds which allow electric signals to be directed from a sensor in the tyre to a receiver in the car. Tread depth and temperature are continuously monitor by rubber-based sensors. Additionally, the data can be transmitted to the vehicle electronics or to a smartphone. In the ContiAdapt technology, micro-compressors are integrated into the wheel to adjust the tyre pressure with a variable-width rim. Due to this, the vehicle system can modify the size of the contact patch under different road conditions.
Moreover, Goodyear and Dunlop have been working towards self-inflating tyres. A vehicle running under recommended tyre pressure can have affect fuel efficiency. To solve this issue, the company introduced Air Maintenance Technology (AMT) which can eliminate this issue. It packs an electronic part into a tyre which regulates air pressure. The AMT detects the air and its pressure in a tyre and tops it up automatically when required. The technology will eliminate the need for drivers to pump up tyres. As per company the technology is estimated to be launched in 2019-2022. Additionally, in Mar, 2016 company unveiled a sphere-shaped tyre which will make driverless cars safer and smoother on roads. The spherical tyre would get suspended from the car by magnetic fields. It will increase passenger comfort and reduce noise. The major advantage of the tyre will be that it will allow the car to move in all direction hence parking can be done in tight spaces too. Hence, due to growing automotive market and technological advancements, it is expected that the global automotive tyre market will show a significant growth in near future.
